Hershey Co. (HSY: sentiment, chart, options) provided investors with some sweet news today when it reported that its second-quarter earnings rose to $41.5 million, or 18 cents per share, from its year-ago profit of $3.6 million, or 1 cent per share. Revenue was virtually flat at $1.1 billion. Excluding certain one-time items, Hershey said it earned 29 cents per share, beating the Street estimate by a penny per share.

For the full year, Hershey forecast earnings from operations in the range of $1.85 to $1.90 per share, which is above the Street estimate for a gain of $1.84 per share.

The security is up more than 4% this afternoon on the positive earnings news. The shares have been on the rise since putting in a near-term bottom in the 32.50 area in early July. The stock has pulled above resistance at its 10-week and 20-week moving averages in trading today, but it must still conquer resistance at its 10-month trendline. HSY has not finished a month above this long-term trendline since April 2007.

Sentiment toward the shares is extremely pessimistic. The Schaeffer's put/call open interest ratio rests at 0.75 and is higher than 88% of all those taken during the past 52 weeks. Short sellers have also loaded up on bearish bets, as almost 18 million HSY shares have been sold short, accounting for nearly 8% of the company's total float. Even Wall Street is giving the candy maker the cold shoulder, as 9 of the 12 analysts following HSY rate it a "hold" or worse. If the shares can maintain their fledgling uptrend, the stock could benefit from an unwinding of this skepticism.
